Every five years, millions of Hindus visit Nepal for “mela,” a month-long celebration culminating in the ritual slaughter of hundreds of thousands of animals. Water buffalo, goats, chickens, pigs, ducks, and rats are decapitated with blunt metal swords in an alcohol-fueled killing frenzy. In 2019 alone, as many as 250,000 creatures were beheaded.

The 2019 festival was captured for the climax of our new groundbreaking documentary Christspiracy. We expose shocking details from the event, including how animals were illegally smuggled from India, a nation founded on nonviolence towards animals. Despite this, we successfully rescued a baby goat alongside courageous activists Deepjay, Altab, and Manoj. The goat, whom we named Gadhimai, was safely transported to an animal sanctuary.
