The practice of animal sacrifice during Eid, while deeply rooted in tradition, must be abolished for several reasons:
Compassionate Alternatives to Animal Sacrifice:
Following the example of Altab Hossain, a Muslim animal activist who rescued his own families cow for Eid, we urge Muslims to explore alternative ways to participate in the festival that are more compassionate and arguably sacrificially superior to conventional practices:
1. Blood Donation—A Life-Saving Sacrifice
Blood Over Carnage: Instead of taking lives, choose to give life. On Eid, donate blood—a selfless act that aligns with the spirit of sacrifice. By doing so, you contribute to saving human lives, embodying the essence of compassion.
2. Redirecting Funds for Good
Charity Beyond Slaughter: Rather than spending money on purchasing animals for sacrifice, redirect those funds to support impoverished families in Palestine. We can allocate the funds to purchase groceries for underprivileged families, construct wells in water-scarce regions, and cover education and hospital expenses for those who cannot afford them. This gesture not only helps those in need but also reflects the true essence of Eid—compassion and solidarity.
3. Fasting as a Symbolic Connection
Commit to fasting in preparation for Eid, in solidarity with the animals who suffer during sacrifice. This symbolic act is a reminder of their plight and reinforced commitment to advocating for compassion for all. It is prohibited (haram) to fast on the 10th Dhul Hijjah, which is the day of Eid al-Adha. If you are not able to fast the full 9 days of Dhul Hijjah, then try to ensure to fast on the 9th Dhul Hijjah at a minimum, which is the Day of Arafah. The month of Dhul Hijjah begins 10 days before Eid Al Adha and fasting is advised on the first 9 days.
4. Cruelty-Free Eid Cuisine
Plant-Based Feast: Eid celebration can revolve around cruelty-free food. Prepare delicious vegan dishes, showcasing that we can honor our faith without causing harm to animals. It’s a powerful message to the world: compassion and celebration need not involve suffering.
5. Animal Rescue
Protecting God’s Creatures : Rescue animals from Eid sacrifice whenever possible, and passionately encourage others to do the same. By choosing to save lives, we can celebrate Eid al-Adha with compassion and kindness, creating a more humane and loving world for all creatures.
“In embracing these alternatives, I find fulfillment in honoring both my faith and my compassion for all living beings. We are the followers of the Prophet, always kind and compassionate.” – Altab Hossain, Muslim Animal Activist.
FAQs and Socials
FAQ 1 : Is Animal Sacrifice mandatory?
The five pillars of Islam represent the core obligations for practicing Muslims. They include Salah (Prayer), Shahada (Kalima), Saum (Fasting), Zakat (Charity), and Hajj (Pilgrimage). Muslims perform daily prayers, declare their faith, fast during Ramadan, give to charity, and undertake the pilgrimage to Mecca if able. While animal sacrifice (qurbani) is associated with Hajj, it’s not mandatory for all believers.
FAQ 2 : People sacrifice animals to feed the poor. Right?
People claim that animal sacrifice is performed to feed the poor, but is this entirely truthful? The Quran states that neither blood nor meat reaches God; it is our piety and good intentions that do. In a survey we conducted, every poor person standing in queue for meat collection said they would prefer cash. This clearly indicates what the poor truly need. So, if God does not desire flesh, nor do the poor, why do we continue to kill animals? If we genuinely care about helping the poor, there are better ways: buying them a rickshaw, paying for their education, covering their monthly plant-based groceries, or paying their medical bills.
